Fog brings chill in north

Special Correspondent

Winter chill returned with a vengeance after receding for a while in Rangpur and its surrounding areas early yesterday afternoon. A nip was felt in the air until 1 pm and a heavy fog shrouded the sun.
When asked about the fall in temperature in Rangpur and the north-western region, Abul Kalam Mallick, a meteorologist at the Dhaka Met office, told The Independent yesterday that the weather is turning chilly, but not cold. The sudden revival of the nip in the air was due to the arrival of the ridge of the subcontinental high, stretching to West Bengal and adjoining areas, as well as to western Bangladesh, from Bihar on Tuesday night.
The ridge is responsible for forcing down the western jet wind, thus causing a dip in the temperature.
Last week, northern Bangladesh and parts of the south-western region experienced some light rain that turned the weather cold.
The mercury begun to plummet since early Tuesday, with Rajshahi experiencing a minimum temperature of 10.4 degrees Celsius, which rose to 11.4 degrees Celsius yesterday.
In Rangpur, it was 13.8 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, which dropped to 11.6 degrees Celsius yesterday. A maximum of 25.3 degrees Celsius made it quite cold for people living in the northern region the country.
Neighbouring Dinajpur and Bogra recorded 11.7 degrees Celsius and 12 degrees Celsius, respectively.
In Dimla of Nilphamari, the minimum temperature was 12.5 degrees Celsius, while the mercury slid to 12 degrees Celsius in Rajarhat of Kurigram.
