Bangladesh fielding coach Richard Halsall tipped the dropping catches as disappointing, stating that they are attempting to address these immediately ahead of the upcoming international games.
Bangladesh’ shoddy fielding and injuries in New Zealand rocked the tour, which outshone their scintillating performance against the Black Caps and sparked outbursts from Tigers’ fans across the world.
“(It’s) very disappointing obviously 16 to 17 catches going down and we don’t expect that from our group,” said Richard Halsall, who returns to Dhaka from London on Monday to join the team’s practice ahead of the upcoming tour in India.
“We have been excellent for the past two years. There was a concern and alongside this result it is something that we will work out,” Halsall told reporters after the opening day practice at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium yesterday.
When asked if there was any influence of weather behind Bangladesh’s poor fielding performance, English-born coach said that it may be happened for two reasons-technically and mentally- or combination of two.
“No, weather did not play any part. You drop catches either you are not technically very good or you are not mentally into the game. It’s a combination of the two. For some players it was a technical issue and with some others it was a mental issue. With each individual catch it was slightly different,” the fielding coach told the media.
“We will have to address it. It’s never classic black and white. It’s very simple,” he also told.
Richard picked pair by pair such as Sabbir Rahman-Soumya Sarkar, Mominul Haque-Imrul Kayes to hold catch-taking practice at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (SBNCS) at the last quarter of the opening day practice session.
He said that they are practicing them individually to amend the errors of the fielding especially catch-taking practice.
“We are looking at them individually and how many catches they take during a practice. Were we taking all the catches in practice or were we doing enough in practice,” he said, adding “But the weather over there is not really cold and the New Zealanders were also mystified why they dropped so many catches.”
The coach said that they couldn’t win one or two matches as they could not post too many score on the board.
“We were not down because of the condition. You can’t score 600 runs unless you get hold of the condition so I don’t agree with that. We were competitive in most of the matches. We should have won one or two matches in New Zealand,” he said.
Citing the past experience of touring in India with England team last four years back, Halsall said that they had to struggle badly to attack India by three pacers and one spinner.
“Obviously the coach and the captain will look into the matter considering the condition in Hyderabad. But the last time I was there with England we had three seamers and a spinner in Graeme Swan and that was not enough,” he said.
“We should have gone with two and two and it was four years. Its going to be a good wicket to bat on and India recently had produced good wickets to bat on. They have not produce track that help the spinner from the start and the seamers will have to do a lot of work,” he wrapped up.
