The match between Prime Bank South Zone and BCB North Zone in the first round of the Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL) ended in a tame draw yesterday at Sylhet International Stadium.
While a draw was a predictable result, there was curiosity whether South Zone opener Fazle Mahmud could bring up his double century after ending the third day on 121. He added just 26 runs to his overnight total to be out on 147 and failed to hit a double century like North Zone’s Naeem Islam.
However Fazle Mahmud’s 147, complemented by the half-centuries from Mosaddek Hossain Saikat and Ziaur Rahman, helped South Zone to amass 448 runs in the first innings. Still they conceded 44 runs lead as North Zone piled up 492 runs in the first innings. When they ended the first innings, the draw was all but sure. North Zone batted 25 overs in the second innings to score 69 for two before the umpires took off the bails to announce a draw. Jahurul Islam Omee made 29 while his fellow opener Junaid Siddique was unbeaten on identical scores.
Resuming the day 294 for four, South Zone lost the overnight batsman Mosaddek Hossain who added just 24 runs to his overnight total of 30 to be out on 54.
Mahmud however got an apt support from Ziaur Rahman who accompanied him nicely. Yet he was unable to bring up the double as left arm spinner Taijul Islam got the better of him. Mahmud hit 14 fours and three sixes in his 311 balls knock.
Abdur Razzak, the captain of South Zone was the other notable scorer for the side with an unbeaten 35 off 29. Taijul Islam claimed five for 136 runs for North Zone.
Earlier South Zone’s left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak went past 450 first-class wickets in his 100th game as he snapped up five for 185 in the first innings of North Zone. He is now the leading wicket-taker in Bangladesh's domestic first-class cricket with 451 wickets.
Naeem Islam scored a patient 185 in the first innings which helped North Zone to rack up 492 before they declared the innings. Opener Jahurul Islam Omee made 65 while Suhrawardi Shuvo contributed 57 runs.
