RAJSHAHI: Forty-nine drug peddlers of Char Shampur area under Motihar police station Rajshahi city yesterday returned to normal life and promised that they would not get involved in drug peddling again. They were rehabilitated with sewing machines and cash money.
Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) hosted the meeting titled ‘Rehabilitation and Reception of Abandoned the Drug Trades’ at the play ground of Char Shampur Primary School under Motihar police station of the city yesterday for rehabilitating some of the drug-peddlers at Katakhali Char in Shampur area.
RMP Commissioner Shafiqul Islam BPM was the chief guest while Ameer Jafar, Deputy Commissioner (East Zone) of RMP, presided over by the meeting.
Additional Commissioner Sarder Tamij Uddin Ahmed, Deputy Commissioner (West Zone) AKM Nahidul Islam, Mayor of Katakhali Minucipility Abbas Uddin, Freedom Fighter Dr Abdul Mannan, Senior Assistant Commissioner Ifte Khayer Alam were the special guests. RMP Commissioner Shafiqul Islam sought community support to make the society free from addiction, trading and trafficking of drugs. He said people should extend cooperation with specific information about the criminals as they know well about their location.
The law enforcement agencies and others concerned to expedite the anti-drug drives to make the society free from the curse, Islam urged.
RMP Commissioner handed over sewing machines and cash money among 15 abandoned drug traders. Later, 49 drug peddlers surrendered to police. Among them 42 are male and seven are female.
