Police arrested four suspected leaders and activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS), a student wing of Jammat-e-Islami, from Shahid Habibur Rahman Hall of Rajshahi University yesterday.
The detainees were Shaheed Habibur Rahman unit Shibir president and masters student Philosophy department; Abu Zafar, secretary Saiful Islam, a master student of Social Work dept, treasurer and also Islamic Studies 4th year Anamul Haque and activist Abdul Alim, a third year student of Sociology department, who had been served two month jail on charge subversive activities.
Witnesses said some Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders and activists, led by RU Unit BCL President Golam Kibria and Secretary Faisal Ahmed Runo, detained the Shibir men from room no.141 of Shaheed Habibur Rahman hall of the campus and later took them to the guest room around 3am on Monday.
They also recovered Tk 2000, Shibir hall unit men lists, notepad, calendars, jihadi (religious uprising) books from their procession. Later, they handed over the Shibir men to police.
RU BCL unit president Golam Kibria and Secretary Faisal Ahmed Runo said the arrestees were directly involved with Shibir politics. They were plotting for subversive activities on the campus.
Humayun Kabir officer-in-charge (OC) of Motihar police station said four students were handed to police by BCL leaders. Necessary legal steps would be taken against them after investigation, he added.
