In a show of rare determination and resolve, Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) on Monday conducted drives at four major entities in Dhaka and Chittagong. In a well-planned and coordinated move, three teams of the anti-corruption watchdog, simultaneously went to Chittagong Customs House, Chittagong Port, Biman Bangladesh Airlines headquarters in the capital and the Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA) office in a bid to uproot corruption from these entities.
This is indeed a positive development in a country where ACC have often been termed as a paper tiger with no real bite to combat the epidemic of corruption. The recent activities of the organization have proved, to a great extent, the naysayers wrong. Apparently they do mean business and the corrupt elements must have got the signal.
Corruption is an evil, which has played havoc with the socio-economic development of this country. It is a curse and a major hurdle to the progress of Bangladesh. Many believe that the main cause of rapid corruption in Bangladesh is lack of accountability. ACC, all said and done, is still not fully independent. It is hardly a secret that the institution has been influenced and used by successive governments for their personal gains or even worse political victimisation of the opponents.
It is said that behind every great fortune there is crime. Unfortunately most people want great fortune and are least bothered about the part, i.e., crime. Corruption causes inequity in society and the gap between the rich and the poor increases. It is also regarded as the murder of merit. Corrupt people bypass deserving people and appoint their relatives or supporters to lucrative posts.
Unfortunately too many people have a relaxed attitude towards corruption. While the ACC must be determined to ensure a corruption-free Bangladesh, the citizens on their part should also refuse to tolerate or accept corruption as a way of life. Every member of the society needs to make an effort by setting their personal, professional and official conduct above any type of corrupt influence.
There is no doubt that fighting corruption is a challenging task. The recent drives prove that serious efforts to combat corruption have started, but fighting corruption is also a collective social responsibility that should serve the common good. While it is important that the people must act together in eradication of corruption, ACC officials must adopt and demonstrate absolute fairness and transparency in discharge of their duties. The intelligentsia, the academia, civil society and media should try to sensitise the people about the adverse impacts of corruption on the society and economy.
