Finance minister AMA Muhith said that the athletes will help the country move forward further by setting glaring instances at international level.
“Bangladesh are making a progress in sports beside other sectors. Hopefully athletes from all the discipline will set more scintillating examples at international stage and help the country move forward further,” said AMA Muhith while he was speaking as chief guest at the Kool-BSPA Sports Award ceremony.
Muhith later distributed trophies and certificates among the awardees at a local hotel yesterday. AIPS (Asia) president Mohammed Qasim, Malik Mohammad Saeed, head of marketing of Square Toiletries Limited, Bangladesh Football federation (BFF) president Kazi Mohammad Salauddin, Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) secretary general Syed Shahed Reza along with other sports legends and celebrities were also present.
Sponsored by Kool, a total of 18 athletes, coaches, organisers along with two organisations under 21 categories including eight in 2015 and 10 in 2016 alongside three special awards have been given this time.
Bangladesh pace prodigy Mustafizur Rahman and swimmer Mahfuza Akhter Shila received the sportsman awards for their outstanding performances in 2015 and 2016 respectively. Mustafiz grabbed the sportsman award of 2015 leapfrogging Mahmudullah Riyad and Soumya Sarkar. Shila bagged her award of 2016 beating Tamim Iqbal (cricket) and Ashraful Islam (hockey).
Mustafizur Rahman later earned the popular choice award by 25,000 public votes.
