The ruling party MP of Feni-2, Nizam Uddin Hazari, has filed a defamation suit of Tk. 10 crore against the editor of The Daily Observer, Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury. Hazari alleged that Sobhan was jealous of his fame and published a report in his daily on January 23 under the headline “Police await PM’s order to crack down on drug lords” to tarnish his reputation.
A journalist of the English daily, Mamunur Rashid, and three others were named co-accused in the case. According to the case statement, the report had mentioned the names of several lawmakers, including Hazari, and published their photographs with the intent to “defame them”.
