Bumper production of mustard likely

JAMALPUR: Favorable weather condition, timely sowing of seed, in absence of pest attack and using of balanced fertilizer have made farmers optimistic to get bumper production of mustard in the district this year, reports BSS.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources farmers have already started harvesting of mustard.
A total of 20,361 hectares of land have been brought under mustard cultivation in seven upazila of the district with the production target of 25,044 tonnes of mustard.
Of the total, farmers cultivated mustard on 4,200 hectares of land in Sadar upazila, 3,300 hectares in Sarishabari, 3,021 hectares in Melandah, 4,500 hectares in Islampur, 1,900 hectares in Dewanganj, 2,020 hectares in Bakshiganj and 1,420 hectares in Madarganj upazila.
Hasemuzzaman, a farmer of Ghoshpara in Bakshiganj upazila, cultivated BARI-14 variety mustard on two bighas of land said he is expecting a bumper production of mustard as the pots of the mustard are healthy.
He said in absence of pest attack and favorable weather has made me optimistic to get desire production. Deputy Director of DAE M Rafiqul Islam said most of the farmers have cultivated high yielding variety mustard like BARI-14, BARI-15, BARI-9 and Tory-7. The varieties are short duration varieties.
DAE office sources said mustard grows well in the temperature between 13 degree to 20 degree Celsius and low fogging and this year the weather was appropriate for the crop.
