The education ministry will today place before the Cabinet the draft laws for setting up two public universities in different parts of the country before the Cabinet. The universities are ‘Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Science and Technology University’ in Jamalpur and ‘Sheikh Hasina University’ in Netrokona, according to education ministry sources. It has been learnt that the draft laws for Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Science and Technology University have been drawn up to fulfil the pledges of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. She gave the consent in principle to set up a specialised public university named Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Science and Technology University, by upgrading the Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Fisheries College in Jamalpur. The draft law for ‘Sheikh Hasina University’ was also prepared following the promises made by the Prime Minister. An inter-ministerial meeting was held on Nov 23 last year to examine the 57 provisions formulated to run the universities. After getting the Cabinet’s nod, the draft laws would be sent to the law ministry for vetting and put up before the Cabinet again for its final approval. Before being passed by Parliament, they would go to the President for approval.
The motto of the universities is to hasten the achievement of the national goal of a digital Bangladesh and to create a skilled research team to address different problems effectively at the national level. The present government is emphasising the establishment of science and technology universities both in the public and the private sector. Currently, there are 38 public universities in the country.
