Proper training can double women’s income: Study

UNB

When poor women engage themselves in income-generating initiatives after they receive proper skill training, their earning simply doubles the amount they would earn previously, shows a recent study, reports UNB.
Some 1400 women participated in the study done by Brac Research and Evaluation Division.
It reveals that while in 2014 these women earned Tk 2,000 monthly on an average, their income rose to Tk 4,000 monthly in 2015 as they started doing skilled work after proper
training. Many of them turned out as successful entrepreneurs, too.
With the increase in their economic capacity, their importance in the family and society also grew. Besides, their capacity and freedom to take decisions also increased.
The findings of the study titled ‘Impact evaluation of economic empowerment of poor and vulnerable women in Narayanganj project’ were shared at a roundtable discussion yesterday at the BRAC Centre, organised by BRAC with support from the European Union.
Women and children affairs additional secretary (development and planning) Mahmuda Sharmin Benu attended the roundtable discussion styled ‘Economic growth in Bangladesh: Why gender matters’ as the chief guest.
Minister Counsellor, human and social development, delegation of the European Union to Bangladesh, Jürgen Heimann, attended it as a special guest.
Coordinator, impact assessment unit, Andrew Jenkins, research fellow Fatema Zhura Khatoon, and research associate Mohammed Safayet Khan made a presentation on the research findings.
Professor Ferdous Jahan of Dhaka University’s Public Administration made separate presentations on the innovative approach of ‘BRAC economic empowerment for poor and vulnerable women in Bangladesh’ (EEP) project.
EU representative, Jürgen Heimann  observed that 3,600 women have received training under this project and 92 per cent of them already got engaged in income-generating activities. A major accomplishment of this project is that some 540 women entrepreneurs have launched their own businesses.
