Seminar on combating drug abuse held at NSU 
North South University (NSU) organised a discussion titled ‘Combating Drug Abuse and Corruption in Bangladesh’ at the auditorium yesterday, says a press release. Students of different disciplines participated in this important seminar. The primary objective of the discussion was to refrain the youth from indulging themselves into drug abuse and restrain the concept of bearing corruption in public life. Moreover the discussion programme was held to draw attention regarding the negative impact that drug abuse and corruption can affect not only to the users but also people surrounding them. Regarding corruption, it was discussed that people must do their own civic duty; where ethic ends corruption starts. Iqbal Mahmood, chairman of Anti Corruption Commission, addressed the programme as chief guest. Azim Uddin Ahmed, chairman of the Board of Trustees (BOT), NSU, Khandakar Rakibur Rahman, director general of the Department of Narcotics Control, and Dr Arup Ratan Chowdhury, President of MANAS, were present as special guests. 

Seminar on insurance in economic dev held 

Canadian University of Bangladesh hosted a seminar on ‘Role of Insurance in Economic Development of Bangladesh’ on Saturday at the university auditorium, says a press release.
M Shefaque Ahmed, Actuary; Chairman, Insurance Development & Regulatory Authority Bangladesh (IDRA), was chief guest. Dr Chowdhury Nafeez Sarafat, founder and chairman, Canadian University of Bangladesh, conferred the vote of thanks at the event. Renowned Academicians Prof Emeritus AK Azad Chowdhury, former chairman, University Grants Commission of Bangladesh (UGC) and honorary advisor of Canadian Universities of Bangladesh, was also present on the occasion. Shoeb Chowdhury, chairman, The Daily Asian Age and honorary consul, The Republic of Malta in Dhaka, Bangladesh attended the program as the guest of honour.  Prof William H Derrenger, vice-chancellor, Canadian University of Bangladesh, inaugurated the seminar. The seminar was organised for the students of Canadian University of Bangladesh to learn about the insurance sector in Bangladesh, job prospects in this sector and how to face key challenges in economics. 

Int’l confce on governance and dev begins at RU
Rajshahi: A two-day international conference on ‘Governance and Development: Asian Perspective’ began yesterday on senate building on Rajshahi University (RU) campus.
The conference was organised by Administration Department (PA) in assistance with Higher Educational Quality Enhancement Project (HEGEP). State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahariar Alam, MP, inaugurated the programme as the chief guest.  Shahriar Alam said, “Without good governance, sustained development is not possible at all while corruption, political instability, militarism are the main obstacles to the development of the country. So, our government has been facing these issues strongly”.  RU vice-chancellor Prof Mohammed Mizanuddin and pro-vice chancellor Prof Chawdhury Sarwar Jahan were the special guests and Public Administration department (PA) chairman Azharul Haque was in the chair on the occasion. 
 Around two hundred researchers, specialists, professors from USA, US, South Koria, India, and Nepal have participated on the programme. A total of 64 papers will be presented in two days’ conference.
