Bangladesh and India yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the sustainable development of Rajshahi city, which India often considers as the gateway to Bangladesh, reports UNB.
Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Harsh Vardhan Shringla, Additional Secretary, Economic Relations Department, Ministry of Finance, Shah Md Aminul Haque and acting Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation Md Nizam Ul Azim signed the MoU on their respective sides.
The signing of the MoU today is a follow-up of an earlier MoU signed by our two governments in April 2013 for the implementation of projects in socio-economic sectors in Bangladesh, said the High Commissioner.
An amount of Tk 21.95 crore has been made available for development projects in Rajshahi city, including reconstruction of infrastructure of Rajshahi Cultural Sangho; construction of a Library building. Padma Library; conservation of water bodies; construction of footpath along different roads in the city; and conservation of a few temples in the city.
I've no doubt that these efforts will contribute in their small way to the beautification and betterment of the urban environment in Rajshahi, said High Commissioner Shringla.
He said they are now in a position to implement the MoU and take the projects work forward in a timely manner. I'm confident that the Rajshahi City Corporation, which is entrusted with the task of implementing the project, will complete the work as early as possible so that these could provide added civic amenities to the local populace.
During the Liberation War in 1971, Bir Muktijoddhas, together with the Indian Army, fought heroically against the occupation forces in this region, the High Commissioner recalled.
The role of Bangabandhu Sheikh Muzibur Rahman and Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi will always be cherished in the memories of the people of both our countries, he added.
Chief Engineer of Rajshahi City Corporation Ashraful Haque and Assistant High Commissioner of India Abhijit Chattopadhyay were, among others, present.
