Seminar on modernism and postmodernism held 
A two-day long seminar on ‘Modernism and Postmodernism: Film & Drama, Fine Arts, Poetry, Fiction’ was held on Friday at DUCSU (Dhaka University Central Student’s Union),
The programme was organised by Atandra Pathshala, a wing of Atandra Bangladesh. Zaynul Abedin, Lecturer, Department of English, University of Dhaka, was present as chief guest. The first day of the session (January 13, 2017) was on modern and postmodern film & drama, and fine arts, discussed by Ahmed Tahsin Shams, Lecturer, Department of English, Notre Dame University Bangladesh, Mohammad Sajedul Haque, artiste from Institute of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka.  The second day of the session (January 20, 2017) was on poetry, fiction, discussed by Ahmed Tahsin Shams, and Nazmun Naher Shishir, journalist, The Daily Observer. Aninda Adhikary, Director of Atandra Pathshala, and Zulias Cezar, Founder Chairman of Atandra Bangladesh initiated this open-for-all seminar and wished to continue further.

Reunion of DU Botany department held
The second reunion of Dhaka University (DU) Botany department was held on the campus yesterday amid festivity and fanfare manner.
DU Vice-chancellor Professor Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique inaugurated the day-long programme as the chief guest at Curzon Hall auditorium on the campus yesterday morning. The reunion, however, honoured the State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Ministry Meher Afroze Chumki.
Presided over by the President of DU Botany Alumni Association Professor Dr Kazi Abdul Fattah, Dean of DU Biological Sciences faculty Professor Dr Md Imdadul Hoque and Professor of Botany department Dr A Z M Nowsher Ali Khan addressed the function among others.

Inter-varsity cultural competition held at DIU
Youth Fiesta 2017,' an inter-university cultural competition, was held on Ashulia campus of Daffodil International University (DIU) on Friday with the participation of students of 11 public and private universities.
Chief Information Commissioner Prof. Dr Golam Rahman inaugurated the pompous cultural completion as chief guest in the morning with Anuj Kumar Chakrabarty, Convener, DIU Cultural Club, in the chair. Speaking on the occasion, he said cultural activities are required for improving life standard of the people. He thanked the DIU for taking the initiative to inspire the new generation in cultural activities. He urged all concerned to remain cautious so that the new generation fall prey to the aggression of alien culture. DIU Trustee Board Chairman M Sabur Khan and noted folk singer Kiron Chando Roy also spoke on the occasion. The main competition began with the cultural performance by the students of University of Liberal Arts.

Gold medal distributing ceremony at RU
University Grants Commission (UGC) chairman Professor Dr Abdul Mannan, yesterday said “University is the pride for the country and nation.  Formalities are necessary for acquiring knowledge and degrees”.
 “University is a formal centre for knowledge.  Like that Rajshahi University (RU) is a potential campus in the northern part. This varsity is going to occupy a vital place in the spread of higher education in country and abroad within a short period”. He said these while handing over gold medals to students of the university at a function on the campus as chief gust while RU vice chancellor Prof Dr Mohammed Mizanuddin was in the chair. Around 12 graduate meritorious students from Masters of Business Administration (MBA) programme under evening and regular courses received gold medals for their outstanding performance on academic results while 448 MBA students receive academic certificates on the programme. The students are: Md Firoz (2nd batch student), Moinuddin (3rd batch), Md Golam Mohiuddin (4th batch), Shamsun Nahar (8th batch under evening (MBA), Sayed Sahed Hasan Kabir, (9th batch), Ahasanul Abedin (10th batch), MBM Rashed (3rd batch), Abdullah al Mamun (4th batch), Otindra Kumar Mallik (5th batch) for MBA programme while Kumar Debashis (3rd batch), Abir Ali (4th batch), Mahaiminul Haque Mithun (5th batch) for under graduate programme. The programme was organised by Institute of Business Administration Department (IBA) on the campus. Fozle Hossain Badsha, MP, UGC member Prof Dr M Shahnewaz Ali, RU pro vice chancellor Prof Chawdhury Sarwar Jahan were present as the special guests.

‘Govt giving priority to education’
Food Minister Advocate Qamrul Islam yesterday said the present government is an education-friendly one and it is giving proper priority to education.
“The goal of the government is to raise the literacy rate in the country to hundred per cent. And we are working to attain the goal. School children are now getting new books on the first day of the year, which did not happen in the past,” he said. The minister came up with the observations while addressing the sesquicentennial anniversary of Kishori Lal (KL) Jubilee School and College in the capital. Presided over by president of school’s governing body Md Sayeed, the function was also addressed by noted poet Nirmalendu Goon, among others. Qamrul advised the students of the institution to study well and said, “It is the era of competition. The chances of getting great opportunity in life will become slimmer unless you make good results in the exams. The teachers too will have to give more attention to their pupils.”
