An elderly woman and her granddaughter succumbed to injuries yesterday hours after they were admitted to the Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit of Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) following Friday’s explosion at their rented flat of a building in Chittagong city’s Dewan Bazar area.
Chhamuda Khatun, 65, and her granddaughter Tanima Afrin Ifti, 17, sustained 100 per cent burns in the explosion that resulted from a gas leak at the second floor of a six storied building.
The woman’s grandson, Md Arif, 27, also sustained injuries in the explosion and were being shifted to a Dhaka hospital with 30 per cent burns for better treatment.
Members of the fire service and civil defense along with local people doused the fire and brought the trio to the CMCH on Friday night.
In the explosion, doors, windowpanes of most of the flats of the building and the wall of a nearby building got damaged. A total of 36 families reside in the building.
Bomb experts and crime scene unit of police confirmed after a visit at the spot that the explosion was a result of accumulated gas at the flat.
