Muhith expects him to be remembered for GDP, budget

Finance Minister AMA Muhith yesterday expected him to be remembered for his contribution to accelerated GDP growth and for taking the national budget at a new height to boost further the economy, reports BSS.
“There are enough reasons to remember me,” octogenarian Muhith told a reception hosted by officials of the ministry and financial journalists marking his 84th birthday at his office at Bangladesh Secretariat.
He added that uniformed growth rate was more important for economy of a country which happened in the case Bangladesh.
“Another thing, I think (for what) I will be remembered is that I have taken the budget to a position . . . that is an important element for the entire economy,” he said.
Muhith was born in a respected family in Sylhet on January 25 in 1934 while his father advocate Abu Ahmad Abdul Hafiz was a prominent lawyer, politician and social activist. Syeda Shahar Banu Chowdhury was his mother.
He was the finance and planning minister from March 1982 to December 1983 and later worked as a consultant in different institutions of WB and the UN.
Being a finance minister he presented the national budget for 10 times and as the head of the national exchequer he placed the budget for the eighth time in a row since 2009.
Last year, he placed the country’s 45th budget and the 17th of the Awami League government.
Earlier in the morning family members, relatives and admirers celebrated his birthday at his house while his colleagues in the ministry and newsmen who cover financial issues greeted him as he came to the office.
“It is truly a good luck I have completed 83 years,” he said.
