Student to die for killing youth in Barisal

RANGPUR: A court here yesterday sentenced four persons to death for murdering a businessman in Jalalganj Nilerkuthi village under  Mithapukur upazila in the district four years ago, reports BSS.
Additional District and Sessions Judge of Court-2 of Rangpur Abu Jafar Mohammad Kamruzzaman handed down the verdict in a crowded courtroom. 
The four convicted persons with capital punishments are Sirajul Islam,  33, Jewel, 26, and Sujan Mian, 25, of Pirgachha upazila in Rangpur and Shahin Mian, 25, of village Bogra district.
The court also sentenced Alam Mian, 35, of Bogra to three years rigorous imprisonment and fined him Taka 5,000, or in default, to suffer one year rigorous imprisonment.  Convicted Sirajul Islam was present in the court during announcement of the verdict while the four others were on the run. 
According to prosecution, businessman Chunnu Mian, 45, of village Baro Pansia under Pirgachha upazila was returning home by motorcycle from Mithapukur Bazar at night on August 23 in 2012. On the way, a group of criminals stopped Chunnu Mian at Jalalganj  Nilerkuthi area under Mithapukur upazila and snatched away his motorcycle after critically injuring him with sharp weapons. Local villagers rescued injured Chunnu Mian and sent him to Rangpur 
Medical College Hospital where the attending doctor declared him dead. Altaf Hossain, brother of deceased Chunnu Mian, filed a murder case with Mithapukur Thana police on August 25 in 2012 accusing Sirajul Islam, Jewel, Sujan Mian, Shahin and Alam Mian.  After investigation into the case, the then Officer-in-Charge of Mithapukur Thana Rezaul Karim submitted charge sheet against the five accused persons to the court on December 5 in the same year when the trial began.
Additional Public Prosecutor of Rangpur Advocate Faruk Md Rezaul Karim stood for the state while senior lawyer Advocate Sazzad Sikder defended the accused.
OUR STAFF REPORTER adds from Barisal:  A court in Barisal yesterday sentenced a Madrasa student to death for killing another youth.
The death sentenced lone accused was identified as Mahmud Hasan  Hafiz, 26, ex -student of Kashipur Etimkhana Hafezia Madrasa under Kashipur village of Barisal city. The court handed down the death penalty on Mahmud Hasan, in absentia. Five other accused in the case were acquitted from the charge. 
Rakibul Islam, second additional district and session judge of Barisal, handed down the verdict after examining 12 witnesses and other evidences. The court also fined the accused Tk 50,000.
Advocate Delwar Hosen, public prosecutor of the court, said accused Mahmudul Hasan with his others five friends used to stalk the school going two sisters of the victim Al-Amin.  Aklima Begum, complainer of the case and mother of victim Al-Amin, protested it. At one stage Mahmud Hasan with his other five friends attacked Al-Amin and killed him in broad daylight on 30 December, 2006.
