The indefinite strike of private clinics and diagnostic centres enforced by Bangladesh Private Clinic and Diagnostics Owners’ Association (BPCDOA) in Rajshahi city was called off on Wednesday afternoon.
Shah Mukhlesur Rahman, Secretary of BPCDOA made the announcement saying the authority assured them of meeting their demand.
Earlier, hundreds of patients suffered as the owners observed 26 hours strike protesting mobile court verdicts against three clinic owners from Tuesday.
Bangladesh Private Clinic and Diagnostics Owners’ Association, Rajshahi unit called indefinite strike at 2:00pm on Tuesday, although most of the private clinics and diagnostics of the city shut down soon after the mobile court drive began at around 12:00pm beginning the sufferings.
On the other hand, patients of the government hospital also suffered as the hospital don’t have facilities for all medical tests. Many patients of the hospital were seen running from clinics to clinics for pathological tests, but clinic authorities kept their shutters down and returned the patients.
Some 100 private clinics and diagnostic centers in the city deals more than 1000 to 1200 patients daily, said the clinic owners.
Assigned by the Health Directorate in Dhaka, a mobile court of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) led by executive magistrate Sarwar Alam on Tuesday fined around Tk 8.25 lakh to three private clinics – Amana Hospital, Royal Hospital and Delta Diagnostic Centre – in the city’s Laxmipur area for using expired and smuggled Indian equipment.
Two managers of Amana and Royal hospitals were also picked-up by the law enforcers as they were unable to pay the fine immediately.
The mobile court also found Indian government surgical equipment and blank pathological reports signed by doctors in those hospitals.
The association leaders said the mobile court imposed ‘excessive fines’ under the Consumers’ Rights Protection Act of 2009, although private hospitals are conducted by the Private Clinics and Laboratories (Regulation) Ordinance of 1982.
The association called off the strike at 4pm Wednesday following a meeting with the district administration at office of Rajshahi Deputy Commissioner. The association leaders claimed the administration assured them such raids would not be conducted in future.
