Bangladesh aim to clinch top spot

Bangladesh are expected to clinch top position in the First Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation Solidarity  Archery Championship (ISSFAC) from January 27 to 30 at Maulana Bhashani Hockey Stadium in the capital.

About 70 archers including 19 female drawn from 19 countries will take part in two formats- compound and recurve- . The competition will be held on individual basis in both formats, men’s team event, men’s and women team event in recurve and mixed team event in both format.
Bangladesh Archery Federation (BAF), vice-president and tournament committee chairman M Shoaib Chowdhury,  stated this at a press conference on the eve of the four day championship at the NSC conference room yesterday. He hoped that Roman Sana in the male group and Beauty Roy and Shyamoli Roy in the female group will lift individual gold in the nine event championship.
Kazi Rajibuddin Ahmed Chapol, general secretary of BAF, said the local archers with the support of limited modern equipment have taken a good preparation to give  a good account of themselves. “In fact we want to popularize the game among the young generation all over the country and we will have to prove our ability as successful organizers by staging the Islamic  Solidarity Archery in  a smooth manner. As well have to keep in mind that the next Asian Archery Championship will be held in Dhaka from November 24 to December 1, this year,” said Chapol who is also the treasurer of Bangladesh Olympic Association.
“I think we should give due importance to both international tournaments to enhance country’s image and the archers should also take the Islamic Solidarity Championship as the dress rehearsal for the Asian Championship,” the BAF secretary added.
Islami Bank Limited, Bangladesh will sponsor the Solidarity Championship at a cost of Taka 70 lakh. Abdul Mabud, director of Islami Bank and vice-president of the federation, said that a certain per cent of amount would be spent for the foreign teams’ players and officials local hospitality.  Our bank is always ready to patronize sports and games and so far we have sponsored a number of domestic and international events,” said Abdul Mabud.
The participating teams are: Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Iraq, Iran, Uganda. Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Yemen, Mauritania, Malaysia, UAE, Libya, Morocco, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh.
