Jahangir Alam alias Rajib Gandhi, a top Neo-JMB leader and the mastermind of the Gulshan terror attack, reportedly made confession before a Dhaka court yesterday, UNB reports. Metropolitan Magistrate Ahsan Habib recorded the confessional statement of Rajib after M Humayun Kabir, an inspector of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit and also the investigation officer (IO) of the case filed over the terror attack, produced Rajib before the court on completion of his eight-day remand, court sources said. On January 14 last, a Dhaka court placed him on remand in the case after a CTTC team arrested Rajib from Elenga bus stand area of Tangail on the night of January 13 last.
According to the CTTC, Rajib was involved in the murders of Prof. Rezaul Karim of Rajshahi University and freedom fighter Hossain Ali of Gaibandha. Monirul Islam, additional commissioner of the DMP and also the CTTC chief, Jahangir was directly involved with Tamim Chwodhury and Nurul Islam Marjan in planning the deadly Gulshan café attack. The top militant recruited Md Khairul Islam Payel and Md Shafikul Islam Uzzal in the Neo-JMB and sent them to the capital to take part in the Gulshan attack. Twenty hostages, including 17 foreign nationals, were killed by militants at Holey Artisan Bakery in Gulshan area of the capital on July 1 last year.
