Cricketer Sunny now faces dowry case

UNB

A case was filed against national cricketer Arafat Sunny and his mother Nargis Akter on charge of demanding Tk 20 lakh as dowry from a woman who claims to be his wife, reports UNB. The woman, Nasrin Sultana, filed the case with the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Raihanul Islam yesterday. After recoding Nasrin’s statement, the court exempted Sunny’s mother Nargis Akter from the charges and asked Sunny to appear before the court on April 5 next. Four people have been made witnesses in the case. According to the case statement, Arafat Sunny got married to Nasrin Sultana on December 4, 2014 with an endowment of Tk 5.1 lakh and since then they used to live at the house of Nasrin’s sister in Katasur as a couple. On July 29, 2015, Sunny and his mother demanded Tk 20 lakh as dowry from Nasrin and asked her to bring the money from her father. As Nasrin refused to bring the money Sunny left her, she claimed. Besides, she alleged, Sunny threatened her to publish their personal photographs if she fails to provide the dowry money on December 23, 2016. Later, Nasrin lodged a general diary with the local police station on December 25, 2016. Earlier on Sunday, a court placed the cricketer on a one-day remand, a few hours after his arrest from Aminbazar area in Savar upazila, in a case filed under the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act.
