Tofail Ahmed, Awami League's (AL's) advisory council member and commerce minister, has claimed that BNP leaders have informed the AL that they proposed to the President the name of former chief justice KM Hasan as the search committee head. “Our party's general secretary, Obaidul Quader, is a very competent politician. I think he came to know about the issue from BNP leaders themselves,” he said.
The senior AL leader came up with the statement while talking to reporters at his Secretariat office in the city. On Sunday, Obaidul Quader said the BNP had proposed the name of KM Hasan. However, hours later, BNP secretary general Fakhrul Islam Alamgir dismissed the claim. Tofail said: “Fakhrul Islam's denial was not strong enough.” The minister also said the AL had proposed enactment of a specific law for constituting the Election Commission (EC). It did not suggest any name for the search committee to select the chief election commissioner (CEC) and other commissioners to oversee the next general election. He further said the President is an honest man and a veteran politician. They have absolute trust in him. “We hope the President will form an acceptable EC comprising neutral people,” he added.
