HC issues rule on preserving memorial place

The High Court yesterday issued a rule asking the government to explain why it should not be directed to properly preserve and reform the Birshrestha Hamidur Rahman Memorial Building in Jhenidah's Moheshpur upazila. The HC bench also directed the authorities concerned to submit a report before it by March 23 after conducting an investigation over the present condition of the memorial building and  what steps should be taken to reform the building.
In response to a writ petition, the HC bench comprising Justice Kazi Rezaul Haque and Justice Mohammad Ullah came up with the rule and order. Cultural affairs secretary, housing and public works secretary, director general of department of archeology, deputy commissioner of Jhenidah, executive engineer of housing and public works department at Moheshpur and its upazila nirbahi officer have been made respondents to the rule.
Imtiaj Ahmed, president of Somajer Proti Jubor Uddyag, a rights organisation, filed the writ petition with the HC seeking necessary orders on the authorities concerned to protect and preserve the memorial. Imtiaj submitted the petition based on a report published on January 19, 2017 in a national daily under headline “War hero memorial on verge of collapse. Barrister ABM Altaf Hossain appeared for the petitioner before the HC during the hearing.
