Capel wants women’s team
to perform consistently

Bangladesh women’s cricket team coach David Capel said that women should focus more on their performance so that they could consistently perform at international stage.

“Still we have lot of works to do. We have to work on both technical and tactical sides to do fare well at international stages against the top-ranked teams,” said David Capel, who took the charge of Tigress as the fifth foreign coach after Mamatha Maben (India), Oshadi Weerasinghe (Sri Lanka), Janak Champika Gamage (Sri Lanka) and Shane Deitz (Australia).
“In batting and bowling departments, we have a standard but we needed to be more consistent now. Along with that, fielding should be improved further as international standard,” Capel told The Independent at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (SBNCS) in Mirpur.
The English-born coach praises the overall performance of Bangladesh team in the just concluded five-match ODI series against high-ranked South Africa at home turf though they lost the series with the margin of 1-4. But he thinks that the result would be better for them if it would be 2-3.
“South African women regularly play in international games. They are experienced more than us. They played against Australia before coming here. In that consideration, the girls played better cricket throughout the series especially in the second and third match. Of them, we won only one match,” the former English all-rounder said.
“But it would be better if the result would finish with 2-3,” he also said.
Bangladesh played ACC Women’s T20 Asia Cup in Thailand and the bilateral home series against South Africa within the span of two months under his belt. Drawing a comparison between the two tournaments, the 67-year-old coach said that Asia Cup was different format of games than the home series.
“Actually those were different format of games. It will not be wiser to draw a comparison between the tournaments because one was on T20 and other was on ODI format.  But we want to consider that we played some international games ahead of our main target of ICC World Cup Qualifier,” David Capel said.
When asked about the next campaign of World Cup Qualifier, which will be a real challenge for Bangladesh to qualify the World Cup 2017, Capelo said that Bangladesh should develop the structure of the domestic cricket for women’s cricket to do well regularly at international level.
“Bangladesh needed to develop the structure of the domestic cricket for the women’s cricket. Of course, I have already talked with Athar Ali Khan about it after the completion of the Asia Cup. Then they would do fare well on regular basis at international stage,” the head coach said.
