Court orders release of man serving another’s jail term

SYLHET:  A court here on Sunday ordered the release of a man, who had been serving life imprisonment as proxy for a convict in a murder case, reports UNB.
Following a judicial probe, District and Session's Judge Monir Ahmed Patwary also ordered filing of a deception case against four people, including proxy giver Ripon Ahmed Bhutto.
Senior Jail Super of Sylhet Jail Sagir Ahmed said Bhutto was sent to the jail on October 11, 2015 as Iqbal Hossain Bakul in connection with the killing of Ali Akbar Sumon.
Sumon, son of Cherag Ali of Paschimpara village in Sadar upazila, went missing on September 25, 2009 while returning home from the city. Later, his body was recovered from a haor. Three people -- Daras Miah alias Gayos, his wife Ruzina Begum and Bakul of Housa village in the upazila -- were sentenced to life imprisonment in the case filed over the murder. However, Bhutto, a resident of Ambarkhana of the city, surrendered before a court on October 11 last year identifying him as Bakul.
After languishing in jail for one year and two months, Bhutto finally disclosed his real identity to the jail authorities in December last. Local and national dailies published reports on the proxy imprisonment. Later, a probe body was formed following a court order.
Following investigation, Judicial Magistrate Kazi Abdul Hannan and Joint District Judge M Rezaul submitted a report to the District and Session's Judge Court on January 17. In its report, the committee recommended filing a deception case against Bhutto, lawyer Shah Alam, apprentice lawyer Shamim Ahmed and broker Liaqat Hossain of the deputy commissioner's office.
It also suggested writing the Bar Council and local bar association to take action against Shah Alam and Shamim.
