BSF detains 2 Bangladeshi cattle traders
Satkhira: Members of Indian Border Security Force (BSF) detained two Bangladeshi cattle traders at Shetpur in India while they were returning to Bangladesh with cattle on Saturday afternoon, reports UNB.
The detainees were identified as Hasan Gazi, son of Majed Gazi of Gholgholia village, and Azizul Islam, son of Jan Mohammahd of Char Shripur village in Debhata upazila of the district.
A group of cattle traders entered the Indian territory through Bhatshal border point to bring some livestock, according to local traders.
However, the BSF men detained two of the traders while the group was returning to the country with cattle.
Contacted, company commander of Bhatshal BGB camp Sushil Bhoumik said they are yet to have any information about the arrest.
15,000 fish die at one stroke in pond
Munshiganj: Some 15,000 fish of several species died suddenly at a pond at Tantikandi village in Sadar upazila on Saturday, reports UNB.
Locals informed that all of the fish of the pond started to die from Friday night and in the next morning all the dead fish were afloat on the water surface.
Bazlu Mahmud, one of the two owners of the pond, said they could not identify the reason behind the death of those fish.
Sadar Upazila Fisheries Officer Shahjada Khasru said as there is no sign of poisoning or gasification in the pond, the fish might have died due to a disease.
Fish trader killed in Pabna
Pabna: Muggers killed a fish trader at Dhuldhi village on Ishwardi-Pabna highway in Ishwardi upazila on Saturday night, reports UNB.
The deceased was identified as Hafizur Rahman, 28, son of Abdur Razzak, a resident of Debipur village in the upazila.
Officer-in-charge of Ishwardi Police Station Abdul Hye Talukder said a gang intercepted Hafizur in the area around 9:15pm and tried to take away money while he was returning home from Dashuria Hat.
At one stage, the muggers stabbed Hafizur indiscriminately as he tried to resist them.
Later, locals rescued the victim and took him to Ishwardi upazila health complex where doctors declared him dead.
A case was filed in this connection, said the OC.
Pistol recovered in Shariatpur
Shariatpur: Police recovered one pistol, one magazine and five rounds of bullets from Char Chikandi village in Sadar upazila on Saturday night, reports UNB.
Tipped off, a team of police conducted a raid at an abandoned one-storey building in the area and recovered one pistol, one magazine and five rounds of bullets from there around 9.00pm, said officer-in-charge of Palong Model Police Station Khalilur Rahman.
No one was arrested in this connection.
150 beggars rehabiliated
CHUADANGA: A total of 150 beggars in seven union parishads under Sadar upazila have been rehabilitated, reports BSS.
The beggars have been rehabilitated under the Beggars Rehabilitation Programme of Khulna Divisional Commissioner.
Under the programme warm cloths, goats, poultry birds, van-rickshaws, sewing machines, sarees, loongies and cooking utensils were distributed among the beggars yesterday in the town.
Chuadanga Sadar Upazila was also declared beggars free upazila in the programme.
Chuadanga Sadar Upazila Parisad administration organised a function in this connection on Friday afternoon at Chuadanga Sadar Upazila hall room where all the 150 rehabiliated beggars took part.
1 killed, 20 hurt in road crash

A man was killed 20 others were injured when a bus plunged into a roadside ditch at Pakutia in Ghatail upazila yesterday afternoon. The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.
Officer-in-Charge of Ghatail Police Station Kamal Hossain said the accident took place on Tangail-Mymensingh road as the driver of the bus of ‘Prantik Paribahan’ lost control over the steering while overtaking another bus. The vehicle skidded of the road and plunged into a ditch, leaving a passenger of the bus dead on the spot and 20 others injured. Police and fire fighters sent 12 injured passengers to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital and eight others to Tangail Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
‘Increase sugarcane cultivation to save sugar mills’
RANGPUR: Chairman of Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation (BSFIC) AKM Delwar Hossain has stressed on taking comprehensive steps to increase cultivation of sugarcane for saving the country’s sugar mills, reports BSS.
“There is no alternative to increasing cultivation of sugarcane to smoothly run the sugar mills,” he said in a views-sharing meeting held at Training Complex of Shyampur Sugar Mills Limited (SSML) on Saturday as the chief guest.
The SSML authority organised the meeting with sugarcane growers, representatives of sugarcane growers’ associations, local public representatives and civil society members for inspiring the farmers in cultivation of sugarcane in the area.
With Managing Director of SSML Abul Kalam Azad in the chair, Member of Rangpur Zila Parishad Rafikur Rahman, Chairmen Azizur Rahman of Gopalpur union, Aminur Rahman of Chandanpat union and Sohel Rana of Saddyapuskorini union addressed as special guests.
General Secretary of Shyampur Sugar Mill Employees Association Mamtazul Alam, President of Shyampur Sugar Mill Sugarcane Growers Welfare Association Atikuzzaman Manik and its General Secretary Feroz Ahmed, also spoke.
Sugarcane growers Babu Singh, Shahidur Rahman, Mossarraf Hossain and Abdul Halim raised a number of problems being faced by them and called for further increasing sugarcane price to make its cultivation profitable.
The BSFIC Chairman said that steps were taken to set up digital weight machine in every sugar mill and the farmers would get price of their sugarcane through direct payment to their bank accounts after few hours of bringing the same to the sugar mills.
“The scientists at Bangladesh Sugarcane Research Institute would soon complete invention of effective herbicides for weed management in the sugarcane fields easily at lower costs to get increased production and reap more profits by the farmers,” he said.
He also said that the government would provide more training to sugarcane growers, further increase sugarcane price and enhance subsidies for inspiring them in sugarcane cultivation to make the country self-reliant on sugar production in future.
