National team cricketer Arafat Sunny was placed on a one-day remand by a Dhaka court after being arrested by police from his Aminbazar residence in Savar early yesterday in a case filed by a woman under the ICT Act. Metropolitan Magistrate Pranab Kumar Hui passed the order when Mohammad Yeahia, sub-inspector of Mohammadpur Police Station and also the investigation officer of the case, produced him before the court with five-day remand prayer. Inspector Jane Alam of Mohammadpur police station confirmed the news. “The case was filed by a woman under the ICT Act on January 5 this year,” he said.
Sub-inspector Mohammad Iyahiya, investigating officer of the case, said the woman had accused Sunny of posting their intimate photos on a social networking site without her permission. In the case statement, the woman claimed that she had married Arafat without the consent of their families in December 2014 after seven years of courtship. Later, the families came to know of their marriage, but Sunny had been hesitating to take her away with him.
Mohammadpur police station officer-in-charge Jamal Uddin Mir said Sunny opened a fake Facebook accounts and uploaded the private photos when the woman asked him to give her recognition as his wife.
The woman claimed that after convincing Arafat’s family to accept their marriage, she told Arafat either to take her away with him or arrange for dissolution of the marriage.
According the case statement, Sunny opened a fake account on Facebook in June last year and began posting some of their intimate photos through messenger. He also threatened the woman.
Nargis Akter, mother of Sunny, claimed her son was innocent and that the woman was trying to blackmail her son only for money.
The girl also could not show any documents relating to their marriage, she said.
When asked about the matter, Bangladesh Cricket Board BCB) Chief Executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury yesterday told reporters, “It seems to be a personal matter. We don’t want to comment at the moment, however, we are observing the situation.”
“We are yet to get into the details. As of now what we know, Sunny has been arrested in ICT Act case. Before making any comment, we have to know the matter fully,” Jalal Yunus, the BCB media and communication committee chairman said. Yunus refused to comment on whether they would stand by Arafat Sunny. “First we have to know whether there is any truth into the matter. The investigation is going on. What action we’ll take will depend on the outcome of the investigation,” he added. The left arm spinner made his international debut against Sri Lanka in February 2014 with a T20 against Sri Lanka. He subsequently made his ODI debut against the same team in the same year in a bid to accompany Shakib Al Hasan in the spin department. He was the integral part of Bangladesh’s limited over cricket until he was suspended by ICC for illegal bowling action during the World T20 in March last year.
