The Game Development Committee of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) sketched out a comprehensive plan to produce more young players to strengthen the pipeline of the future of the Bangladesh Under-19 Cricket Team.
They organized the national competition for the Under-18 across the country. From that competition, they primarily selected 140 players with the help of the national age group selectors including Ehsanul Haque Shezan, Hannan Sarkar and Hasibul Hossain Shanto.
The committee therefore whittled down the preliminary selection from 140 to 44.
This time they have planned to host a Challenge Series for them in an effort to form a new team of Under-19 cricket team, which will work as the back-up of the existing Bangladesh Under-19 cricket team, who held their first assignment of ACC Under-19 Asia Cup led by Saif Hassan in Sri Lanka.
The challenge series will be held in two parts. A total of 44 players, splitting into four groups, will take part in the series. Firstly, they will play two three-dayers, where Red Group will face-off Blue Group and Green Group will take on Orange Group. Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium (SANS) in Khulna will host both the matches to be kickstarted from January 23.
The selectors will trim some players after the completion of the three-dayer. During the one day series, some players from the existing U-19 will join with them.
Since then, they will play three-match ODI series, splitting into two groups, East and West. This one day series will also be played at the same venues. Mahbub Ali Zaki and Kazi Imdadul Haque Ripon will supervise the players on the stroke of the Challenge Series as the head coaches. Some will assist them as their deputies.
In this regard, AEM Kawser, senior national manager of BCB Game Development Committee said that the main objective of the squad is to produce the back-up players for the Under-19 squad.
“We earlier organised a national competition for the Under-18 with the participation of the 10 teams including eight divisional teams along with BKSP and Dhaka Metro. Our national age-group selectors primarily sorted out 140 more players in the aftermath of the competition. Then we have picked 44 players for the meet trimming the primary squad,” said AEM Kawser.
“We will therefore pick 24 players for the final squad after the completion of the Challenge Series. We will give them a comprehensive training all the year round for their grooming as future players,” Kawser told The Independent.
“We have formed four teams – Red, Blue, Green and Orange, who play the two three-dayers. Since then, we will form two teams – East and West – who will play three one day matches,” he added.
It is learnt that if the committee and selectors could get one or more extra ordinary player or players from this squad, they will then pick them for the current Under-19 cricket team, who are preparing themselves for the next ICC Under-19 World Cup, which will be held in New Zealand in 2018.
“If the coach thinks that they need one or two more players for particular position, we will then call-up chosen player or players. There always remain two or three such opportunities. In that case, we fill the void with the chosen player or players,” the senior national manager of the BCB Game Development revealed.
