After eight years of President Obama there’s a new chief executive in the Oval Office, and he’s eager to grab the reins of government and steer the United States in a decidedly different direction than was followed by his immediate predecessor.
Donald Trump was sworn in to office of the US president Friday night with all the conventional ceremonies. In his spirited inaugural speech, he echoed the promises he made during his election campaign and unequivocally expressed his aim to pursue his “America First” policy. He promised to return the government from politicians to the people. He also promised a new decree. "From this day forward a new vision will govern our land. From this day forward it’s going to be America first". His words – including a commitment to eradicate terrorism – resonated with the American people who voted him to power.
By “America First” the 45th president certainly meant that America will be his top priority whatever he will do on the domestic front as well as on international front. He continued, “And yes, together, we will make America great again”, reverberating his election slogan. He promised that on the domestic front he would ‘buy’ and ‘hire’ Americans, reiterating what he said for many decades, America had served other nations, ‘enriched foreign industry at the expense American industry, subsidized the armies of other countries while slowing for the very sad depletion of our military.’
He also promised to renovate the worn-out infrastructure, open up the closed industries and build new highways and bridges across the nation. All these words of promise will go well with the people of America whose president he is. In fact Trump’s emphasizing the sort of issues – border controls, protectionist tariffs, a retreat from America’s long position of global leadership – is what drew working class voters and propelled the billionaire to the presidency in the first place. Befitting a builder, Trump talked of constructing new roads and bridges and airports and tunnels all across America, getting people “off of welfare” and “rebuilding our country with American hands and American labour.
The position of US president for decades remained crucial for the world, not just because of its superior economic and military capabilities; it also guided what we usually know to be the ‘modern’ world because of its liberalism and championing human rights. US presidency also defined the country’s relations with Europe, Russia, China, Israel-Palestinian relationship and Middle Easter countries. It is also expected that in the Trump era we will be able to see a more prosperous and peaceful world.
