ACC DG leads anti-graft raid on BMET

An Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) team yesterday raided the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET) office in the city following allegations of massive corruption and misrule.
In a first for the ACC, the commission’s director general, Mohammad Monir Chowdhury, himself led the six-member team that swooped down on the BMET office around 11am.
The team also entered the room of the BMET director general, M Selim Reza. Later, Chowdhury called ACC director AKM Jayed Hossain to the room to interrogate Reza.
The ACC team came out of the room around 12 noon.
Following the raid, Chowdhury told The Independent that the ACC will take serious action if the allegations of corruption were proved to be true. “If someone at the bureau is found to be involved in corruption, he or she won’t be spared,” he said.
He further said the ACC would show zero tolerance to irregularities at the BMET because manpower exports and remittances were the driving forces of the country.  According to ACC spokesperson Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya, the anti-graft team also recorded the statements of the BMET DG and other officials.
About the specific allegation against the BMET, the spokesperson said the ACC had received a written complaint of massive corruption at the bureau.
According to BMET sources, officials became very scared on hearing the news of the ACC raid. Soon after the team’s arrival at BMET, officials of the expatriates’ welfare and overseas employment ministry working at Probashi Bhaban in the capital also became apprehensive of a similar drive.
Brokers too quickly left the ministry to avoid the ACC team.
