The High Court yesterday asked the government to explain in four weeks why ruling Awami League (AL) lawmaker from Tangail-3 constituency Amanur Rahman Khan Rana should not be granted bail in freedom fighter Faruk Ahmed murder case.
The HC bench of justices Sheikh Abdul Awal and Md Khasruzzaman came up with the rule following a petition filed by Rana, now in jail.
So far, three HC benches have declined to hear the plea on several occasions and deleted the matter from the list of hearing.
Adv Abdul Baset Majumder appeared for Rana while attorney general Mahbubey Alam for the government.
Amanur surrendered to a Tangail court on Sept 18 last year in the case.
Later, Amanur and his three brothers were expelled from the district Awami Legaue on charges of various allegations.
On 18 January 2013, freedom fighter and local Awami League leader Faruk was shot dead in front of his residence in the district town. Later, Faruk’s wife Nahar Ahmed filed a case in this connection.
Rana went into ‘hiding’ after he was accused in the case. On February 3 in 2016, police submitted charge sheet against 14, including MP Rana and his three brothers.
Later on September 18, Rana surrendered to a judicial court. Now, he is in Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazipur.
