Mohammad Ashraful, who returns to cricket with the just concluded National Cricket League (NCL) after lifting the domestic ban on him, could not play the upcoming franchise-based Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL) longer version.
Former skipper was slapped a three-year suspension on his domestic cricket and a five-year embargo on his international cricket. He of course could not play in the franchisee tournament till June, 2018.
The fifth edition of the BCL will roll onto the ground on January 28 with the participation of the four franchisee teams, three days after the previous schedule.
Of course, the schedule of the upcoming league delayed for the third consecutive times. Primarily it was slated to take place on January 20. Then Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) tournament committee yet another occasion postponed the date for five days (January 25) at the request of franchisee teams.
All the franchisees showed the cause before the tournament committee that National Cricket League (NCL) has been just finished. So, players should be given some days rest so that they could start the league in full rhythm being fresh.
BCB tournament committee meanwhile held two meeting with the franchisees in the span of 10 days. Last time they sat with the representatives of the franchisees at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Monday and discussed the essential matters of the league.
BCB director and its Tournament committee chairman Saiful Alam Chowdhury said that they delayed the league for eight days from the past schedule due to the scarcity of grounds.
“Consulting with the franchisees, BCB tournament committee fixed the current schedule for the upcoming league. We have delayed for some reasons. Scarcity of grounds is one of them,” said Saiful Alam Chowdhury.
“We fixed five grounds in Dhaka and its adjoining areas grounds including Mirpur, BKSP and Fatullah. But First Division League has already been started in these grounds. Even we could not run games in Mirpur as the repairing works will soon be started there. And so, we have fixed the venues of Sylhet, Bogra and Chittagong for the first round,” Chowdhury told The Independent.
“But franchisees are not interested to play in these grounds because of the existing foggy weather condition. So we are not yet to fix grounds. We could inform you all, at least five days before the outset of the league, where the matches will be held,” he also said.
But it is learnt that the first round games of the league may be held at the Shaheed Chandu Stadium in Bogra and Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.
When asked about any change in the current league, representative of Walton Central Zone Uday Hakim said that they proposed to change the name of the team after franchisee’s name besides some other overture.
“We proposed to alter the name of the team after franchisee but the tournament committee showed no interest about it,” said Uday Hakim.
“Along with that, we all proposed that it would be better for us if all the games will be possible to play in Dhaka and its adjacent areas grounds,” Hakim also said.
The participating teams are Islami Bank East Zone, Walton Central Zone, Prime Bank South Zone and BCB North Zone.
