Noor Hossain was once the drug kingpin of Narayanganj.
With a 'Godfather' as his patron, Noor had expanded his drug empire right under the nose of law enforcers and the local administration.
His drug empire spread from Shimrail crossing, Shimrail truck stand, Siddhirganj Housing to the west end of Kanchpur Bridge and Demra. Every kind of drug, including phensedyl, yaba and heroine, was made available in those areas.
Besides the drug business, Noor was involved in illegal gambling and vulgar dance competitions under the guise of ‘Jatra-pala’. All hawkers, drivers and owners of transport lines, and owners of restaurants and local industries had to pay him money for running their businesses.
Noor roamed around in Narayanganj with a motorcade of at least 20 cars. His aides used to carry a large number of weapons inside those vehicles.
Noor's criminal activities were going unhindered until he went into hiding on April 30, 2014, following the sensational seven murders in the city.
Local sources say that Noor used to work as a helper in the trucks of Iqbal Group in 1985. He later became a driver of the same group.
In 1988, Daimuddin, a local driver, formed the Inter-districts Truck Drivers' and Labours' Association in Narayanganj. Noor was a close associate of Daimuddin and aided him in forming the association. However, Noor revolted against Daimuddin in the next two years and eventually kicked him out of the association. He eventually became the president of the Truck Drivers' Association under the patronisation of a local leader of the Jatiya Party.
Noor changed his Jatyia Party allegiance during the 1991 general election and instead worked for the BNP. He became a local leader after the BNP had won the general election. He then formed his own cadre group.
From 1991 to 2000, he was at the
centre of all criminal activities in Siddhirganj area of Narayanganj.
In 1992, Noor became the chairman of Siddhirganj union parishad and made a major progress through the political ranks. After the first tenure, Noor contested for the same post in 1997 again with support from the BNP. Nazrul Islam, the Narayanganj City Corporation councillor who was among the seven murdered, also contested the polls with support from the Awami League.
Nazrul was announced the winner, but Noor challenged the result and alleged rigging by Nazrul’s men at a few new poll booths. He went to the court and won the legal battle. After re-polling at those centres, Noor eventually emerged as victorious in the election and became more influential in the area.
However, after winning the election, Noor switched his allegiance once again and joined the
Awami League, the party in power at that time. To further earn the trust and confidence of Narayanganj Awami League leaders, he helped barricade the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Narayanganj to foil BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s long march programme from Dhaka to Chittagong.
After the BNP won the election again in 2001, Noor went into hiding in India with some of his close aides, where he spent the next couple of years.
In 2007, Interpol issued a red warrant against him.
After the Awami League won the election in 2008, Noor came back to Bangladesh and again joined the game of politics and drug business.
Noor amassed huge amounts of money through his drug business and extortion. He used to take Tk. 350 per trip from each truck at the Shimrail truck stand on a daily basis. His aides also used to take Tk. 300 per bus from all the passenger buses in Sylhet and Chittaging line at the Siddhirganj bus stand.
Local sources say that Noor used to earn Tk. 40 lakh per month just from the truck and bus stands. Besides, he used to carry on his extortions in all small and medium-sized factories in Siddhirganj and earn another Tk. 40 lakh from those.
He constructed a five-storey building in Shimrail at a cost of Tk. 7 crore. He owned another six-storey building in the same area. In Rasulbaghm, he constructed a seven-storey commercial building.
Noor owns two apartments in Gulshan and another two in Dhanmondi and Banani. He also owns a country house on 40 bighas of land in Narayanganj.
