RAJSHAHI: Public representatives and development activists at a discussion mentioned that concerted efforts of government and non-government organizations concerned is very important for improving living and livelihood condition of the rural poor and marginalized people, reports BSS.
They said there should be effective measures of elevating their socio-economic condition alongside boosting their income so that they can intake nutritive food, attain improved health and avail the scope of institutional learning.
The observations came in an inception meeting of a project titled ‘Development of Poor and Underprivileged Population’ held in the conference hall of Deputy Commissioner in the city Sunday.
CARE Bangladesh and Barendra Development Organisation (BDO) jointly organised the meeting in association with Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and Somosty Project.
Deputy Commissioner Kazi Ashraf Uddin and Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Ataul Gani addressed the meeting as chief and special guests respectively with BDO Executive Director Akhtar Hossain in the chair. Upazila Chairman Anwarul Islam, Abu Sayeed Chand, Jakirul Islam and Abdus Salam and Regional Programme Manager of Care Bangladesh Dr Imran Hassan also spoke.
During his project-briefing presentation, Ashraful Alam, Manager of SDC-Somosty Project, said around 12,850 poor and disadvantaged households including 6,425 producer group family members in Puthiya and Charghat Upazilas will be brought under the project's first phase intervention for improving their living and livelihood condition.
It has provision of bringing more than two lakh targeted families including 40 vulnerable women under various promotional activities including agriculture, cottage and handicrafts for eradicating their poverty and hunger through building capacity by 2020, he added.
Basically, the project intends to boost sustainable family earning and to create more and alternative income sources for attaining the cherished goal of their improved socio-economic condition.
Chief Guest Kazi Ashraf Uddin urged the implementing organisations to discharge their duties with utmost sincerity and honesty for meaningful and effective implementation of the project so that the target group of people can derive its total benefits.
He hoped that the project would help supplementing the government efforts of achieving sustainable development goals.
