Students lock main gate demanding registration

STAFF REPORTER, Ctg
Students lock main gate demanding registration

The agitated MBBS students of University of Science and Technology, Chittagong (USTC) locked the university main gate yesterday demanded that they be registered in Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC).

The MBBS students of 25th, 26th and 27th batches have been demonstrating blockading road over the last five days as BMDC refused to register about 1,104 students due to violations of admission rules by the university authorities.
They are continuing their movement boycotting the classes. The ongoing demonstration also disrupts the service of the USTC hospital for the last five days and many patients are leaving the hospital.
The students for realising their demand blocked Zakir Hossain road from 11am.  When police forced them to leave the road around 11:30am the agitated students locked the main gate of the university and its administration building.
Sources said the USTC had admitted around 368 students every year whereas the rules permit it to admit around 75 in each year. Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) has refused to register the students because the USTC violated the rules by admitting more students than permissible.
In the face of ongoing movement, the university authorities have already postponed the final examination of the 25th batch which was supposed to be started from January 23.
“We have postponed final examination of the 25th batch as they yet to get BMDC approval. We urged the government to consider the matter on humanitarian ground. The students did not make any mistakes,” said Prof Nurul Absar, pro-vice chancellor of USTC.
“There are 1,104 students, including 512 foreign students. If government approved their registration such problem would not be arisen in future as now we are not giving admission more than 75 students per government instructions,” added Nurul Absar.
“We heard some patients are leaving from the hospital, however, on Monday a number of operations have been done successfully in the hospital,” he added.
“Our management is trying to convince the Ministry of Health, we hope if government considers the present students on quality education, the ongoing crisis will be an end,” hoped the pro VC.
