C&F workers attack Ctg customs official

STAFF REPORTER, Ctg

A group of Clearing and Forwarding (C&F) workers attacked an Assistant Commissioner (AC) of Chittagong Customs inside the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) yesterday and besieged him for two hours.

The official was identified as AC Abu Hanif Mohammad Ahad and was injured during the attack. Later CPA security forces rushed to the spot and freed him after two hours at around 4pm.
Sources said C&F agents went there for the signature of the Jetty Examiner in the morning but he (Abu Hanif Mohammad Ahad) asked them to come serially and said he would give signature after examining the imported goods. It annoyed them and they started altercation with him and attacked the official. Later they laid siege to Assistant Commissioner’s office for two hours.
AFM Abdullah, Commissioner of Chittagong Customs, said after hearing the news two joint commissioners of customs were sent there and with the help of port security Abu Hanif was freed from the hostage of the Clearing and Forwarding (C&F) workers. Abdul Ahad said in his face book post, “A mob led by some hooligans has attacked my office room inside the port. They have obstructed me to get out of my room and the Security of the Chittagong Port Authority is trying to resist them but they were cornered. They hurled brickbats on me.
“There was no roof of my office room inside the port, they hurled brickbats in my office as well,” he added.
As they failed to give me bribe so they have carried out the attack, perhaps to kill me, added the AC.
Contacted, Md Altaf Hossain Chowdhury, general secretary of Bangladesh Customs Clearing and Forwarding Agents Association, told The Independent, “It is false that C&F workers attacked the assistant commissioner office. Some hot words exchanged among them as the customs officials were doing late for physical examinations of the goods. Nothing else agitation prevails there.”
“All works are going on normal.  It happens regular it is not a serious issue,” added the C&F agents’ leader.
Lt Col Abdul Gaffar, director security of Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) did not pick up the phone after taking several attempts to call him over phone.
