Fire kills septuagenarian woman
A septuagenarian woman was burned to death and three people were injured as a fire broke out at a house at Koyamajampur village in Durgapur upazila early Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Labanya Prova, 70, wife of late Niranjan Kumar Mandal of the village. Sub-inspector Kamruzzaman of Durgapur Police Station said the fire erupted around 12am in the house. All inmates of the house except Labanya managed to come out the burning house, the SI added. Later, family members recovered the charred body of the elderly woman from her room after dousing the flame.
College teacher found dead
A college teacher was found dead at his residence at Sher-e-Bangla Road in Khulna city on Sunday noon.
The deceased was identified as Chitta Ranjan Bain, 45, son of Lalita Mohan Bain of Ashashuni upazila of Satkhira. He was an assistant professor of English Department of Shaheed Abul Kshem College in Batiaghata upazila. Colleagues of Chitta Ranjan called him several times over phone as he didn’t go to the college in the morning, said Aminul Islam Shwapan, principle of the college. As they didn’t find any response from Chitta Ranjan despite repeated phone calls, they went to his residence around 12pm, said Officer-in-charge of Khulan Police Station Shafiqul Islam.
4 arrested with firearms in Ctg
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in separate drives arrested four alleged arms traders along with a firearms from separate areas of the city on Saturday evening.
Shaheda Akhter, assistant director (Media Wing) of RAB-7, said a they conducted a drive in Chowdhury Hat area of Hathazari upazila in the evening and arrested Safiul Bashar Rony and Sohel Rana with a rifle and 56 rounds of bullet. Meanwhile another team of the elite force conducted a drive in Akbar Shah Thana area of the city in the evening and arrested Manjur Alam and a person yet to be identified along with a foreign pistol and two rounds of bullets.
