Despite showing a glimpse of enormous talent, Soumya Sarkar was criticised for not carrying his good starts. But on a day when it mattered most, he stood tall to demolish a quality South African bowling attack on a slower pitch to script one of the sensational victories of Bangladesh. This time he didn’t stop only to give the side a fluent start rather finished the match in style with a slog-swept six to stun South Africa who looked invincible to Bangladesh. Soumya smashed 88 off 79 with 13 boundaries and one six as Bangladesh coasted to a facile seven-wicket victory to end the defeat jinx against South Africa and stayed alive in the series. The victory also confirmed Bangladesh’s Champions Trophy berth in 2017.
“After missing to post big scores on several occasions, I just wanted to finish the match. I refrained myself from playing some shots which caused my dismissal earlier but it worked for me today as I let myself go free,” said a delighted Soumya after the match.
