Youth killed over sand extraction

A young man was killed in an attack by villagers over sand extraction through dredging from the Meghna River at Dashani in Matlab upazila yesterday.
 The victim was identified as Russell, 30, son of Ranju Mia of Dashani area.Alamgir Hossain Majumdar, officer-in-charge of Matlab North Police Station, said Russell, a dredger machine driver had been extracting sands from the river at Dashani point for the last few days at the behest of some influential people in the upazila.On Tuesday morning, some villagers went to the spot and asked Russell to refrain from dredging.
 As Russell ignored their request, the villagers beat him up mercilessly, leaving him critically injured. Russell died on the way to hospital.
 On information, police recovered the body and sent it to local hospital morgue.
