3 cos shortlisted for country’s largest solar plant in Sirajganj

State-owned North-West Power Generation Company Limited (NWPGCL) has shortlisted three companies for the construction of the country’s largest solar power plant with a capacity of 7.6MW in Sirajganj.
They are: the China Communication and Cons-triction Company (CCC) of China, the Sumec Group Corporation of China, and a joint venture of Energypack of Bangladesh and Power Point of Korea.
 The plant will be set up on 23.75 acres at an estimated cost of USD 15 million. 
The electricity produced there will be supplied to the national grid.
 The NWPGCL has sent the development project proposal (DPP) to the Planning Commission. Once approved, the project will be awarded to one of the three shortlisted companies.
Earlier, a total of nine companies, including two Bangladesh companies, Rahimafrooz Renewable Energy Ltd and Energypac Power Generation Ltd, had submitted tender documents to construct the plant. The NWPGCL had invited bids in December 17, 2015.
 NWPGCL managing director AM Khurshedul Alam told The Independent that they had studied their proposals and shortlisted the three companies.
He said the selection process would be over by February. “We're moving on a fast-track basis because the government wants to focus more on producing electricity from renewable energy sources,” he added.
 Alam said there had been a growing awareness of the long-term adverse effects of global warming due to greenhouse gas emission around the world. 
Efforts were being made to limit carbon discharge by increasing energy production from renewable energy resources, he added.
 The government’s power sector master plan has set a target of 3,490MW of power, to be implemented by the NWPGCL. As per the plan, 100MW of the total production will come from renewable energy sources. The construction of a 7.6MW solar plant by the state-owned company is a step in that direction.
Meanwhile, the government, under its renewable energy programme, has taken up plans to generate 2,000MW of electricity from renewable energy sources by 2021. Out of that, it aims to generate 1,740MW from solar plants. 
The current production of power from renewable energy sources stands at 437MW.
The government is currently working on the implementation of several solar power plant projects to generate a total of 152MW of power.
They are the Dhorola (30MW) Solar Park in Kurigram, Rangunia (60MW) in Chittagong, Sarishabari (3MW) in Jamalpur, Ishwardi (2MW) in Pabna, Aricha (1.5MW) in Manikganj, Sirajganj (1MW) and Gangachhara (55MW) in Rangpur.
Besides, the Cabinet Com-mittee on Public Purchase on October 1 last year had approved the proposal for setting up a 200MW solar park, the largest in the country, in Teknaf of Cox’s Bazar.  The plant will be implemented on a build-own-operate basis by the Singapore-based SunEdision Energy Holding Pte Ltd.
