Speakers at separate discussions at different places in Rangpur division have stressed containing population growth for attaining sustainable development for building a developed nation, reports BSS.
They were addressing the discussions organised to observe the World Population Day- 2015 with the theme of ‘Vulnerable Population in Emergencies’ by the Family Planning Department (FPD) everywhere in the division.
The FPD in association with Mother and Children Welfare Centres, Merry Stopes, Surjer Hashi Clinic (SHC), Family Planning Association of Bangladesh, Help Ailing Mothers, different NGOs and voluntary
organizations chalked out programmes on the occasion.
The programmes included colourful rallies, discussions, mothers’ and couples’ gatherings, slide and documentary film shows, prize giving ceremonies, special health care services to the new mothers and babies at the district, upazila and union levels.
In Rangpur city, a colourful rally, participated by the GO-NGO officials, employees, professionals, students, educationists and commoners with banners, festoons and placards bearing different slogans, paraded the streets. Divisional Commissioner Muhammad Dilwar Bakht attended the main discussion arranged at the conference room of the Civil Surgeon Office on Sadar Hospital premises as the chief guest.
With Deputy Commissioner of Rangpur Md. Rahat Anwar in the chair, Sadar Upazila Parishad Chairman Nasima Zaman Bobby, Divisional Deputy Director of the FPD Shafikul Haque and Civil Surgeon Dr Mozammel Hossain addressed as the special guests.
The speakers said that containing population growth has become an essence of the time for attaining the set development goals in building a healthier, prosperous and middle income Bangladesh by 2021.
They stressed ensuring health services for all people and preventing adolescent pregnancy through stopping child marriage to reduce maternal and neonatal deaths in attaining sustainable development and ensure welfare of all citizens.
They called for creating social awareness and encouraging all able couples for adopting short and long-term as well as permanent methods of family planning and popularise the message of ‘not more than two children, but one is better’. Similar reports of observing the day were received here from the district and upazila headquarters of Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Nilphamari, Gaibandha, Panchagarh, Thakurgaon and Dinajpur districts in
Rangpur division.
