50 hurt in clash
A procession was brought out in Dinajpur during the half-day hartal observed demanding nationalisation of Dinajpur Khansama Degree College on Sunday. INDEPENDENT PHOTO

At least 50 people were injured in a clash between villagers and police in Khansama upazila of Dinajpur on Sunday. The clash took place during a half-day hartal called on demanding nationalisation of Khansama Degree College in the upazila.Police also detained around 50 people in connection with the clash, said Abdul Motin, officer-in-charge of Khansama Police Station.Abu Hatem, former general secretary of Khansama Awami League and convener of the committee alleged that the hartal was going on peacefully in the upazila since Sunday morning demanding nationalisation of Khansama Degree College. At around 12pm the people of Khansama brought out a procession supporting the hartal.But police intercepted the procession when it arrived near the police station in the upazila.Police fired tear shells as the angry villagers tried to precede the procession.
In a moment the area turned into a battlefield. Chase and counter chase took place between police and the agitating villagers.Police charged batons and rubber bullets while angry protesters used brickbats leaving at least 50 people injured.Additional police forces were deployed in the area. At around 2.30pm police took the situation under their control.
