Confce of Greater Comilla Lawyer Welfare Society 
Law Minister Anisul Huq yesterday said government is continuing its efforts to strengthen the roots of democracy in Bangladesh.
“We live in a democratic society and we have to strengthen the base of democracy in our country,” he said. The minister came up with the observations while addressing a biennial conference of Greater Comilla Lawyer Welfare Society, Dhaka, on Dhaka Judge’s Court premises. Urging the legal professionals to play a stronger role in establishing rule of law in the country, the minister said, “Legal profession is a noble and important profession. People of this profession set the direction of the country.” “Jurisdiction of Greater Comilla Lawyer Welfare Society should not only be contained within three districts, it should concentrate on the wellbeing of the lawyers from across the country,” Anisul added.

Road mishap kills edn officer 
An assistant education officer was killed and a teacher was injured when a truck knocked them down at Devipur crossing under Tanore Upazila of the district.
The deceased was identified as Maksuda Ekram, 37. She was Assistant Upazila Education Officer in Tanore Upazila. Akkash Ali, 40, a teacher of Chapra Govt. Primary School, was admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital with grievous injuries. Officer-in-Charge of Tanore Police Station Mirja Abdus Salam said they met the tragic accident when they were returning to office after visiting the school riding on a motorbike around 3.15 pm. 

BGPP gets new committee
A twenty-five member new Executive Committee of Bangabandhu Gobeshana and Prokashana Parishad (BGPP) for the year 2017 was formed at a restaurant in the capital on Sunday.
Alhaj Nasir Ullah Bhuiyan and Advocate Mohammad Mukhlesur Rahman Patwary were elected President and General Secretary respectively of the BGPP, said a release of the parishad in the capital. The other office bearers of the committee are M Nurul Islam Talukder (senior vice-president), M Aminul Bahar (vice president), M Mosharraf Hossein (vice-president), M Harun-Ar-Rashid (joint general secretary), Advocate M Shafiuzzaman Bhuiyan Shawpan (joint general secretary) and Mohammad Ruman Shah Alam (organising secretary).

Kuakata Mega Beach Carnival Jan 14
The first ever “Kuakata Mega Beach Carnival-2017” is going to begin on January 14 eying to make the south-eastern sandy beach of Bangladesh familiar as popular tourist destination both locally and internationally.
Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith would inaugurate the grand opening of the three-day carnival on 14 January morning, said Bangladesh Tourism Board (BTB) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Akhtaruz Zaman Khan Kabir at a press conference Sunday afternoon at BTB conference room. 

Girl Guides camp ends in Barisal 
The three-day long 10 districts camp of Bangladesh Girl Guides Association (BGGA) ended at Barisal regional campus on Sunday night demanding more empowerment of skilled women to prevent social crimes and nourish good citizenship.
The campfire of the programme was held on Sunday night and it was attended by Dr Gazi Md Saifuzzaman, deputy commissioner, Kazi Hosne Ara, additional deputy commissioner Barisal and Md Hossain, social worker, as guests.

PRI to organise workshops for newspersons
Policy Research Institute of Bangladesh (PRI) will organise a workshop on January 25 in the capital on Fiscal Transparency in Bangladesh for print and electronic media journalists covering economic issues in Bangladesh, says a press release. 
With support from the US State Department has undertaken an in-depth study on different aspects of fiscal transparency in the context of Bangladesh. The study is headed by PRI Executive Director, Dr Ahsan H Mansur. The first workshop will be conducted primarily in English and will be coordinated by Dr Ahsan Mansur. There will also be an international expert who will join the workshop from the USA through video-conferencing.  On the other hand the second workshop will be held in February and will be coordinated by Dr Ahsan Mansur. 

BAF Azan, Quirat competition ends
Inter-Base Azan and Quirat competition-2017 of Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) concluded at BAF Shaheen Mosque of BAF base Bashar yesterday.
BAF Base Zahurul Haque team clinched the title of the competition while BAF Base Bir Sherestho Matiur Rahman team became runner-up, said a press release of ISPR in the capital. Sergeant Joynal of BAF base Zahurul Haque team secured first position both in Azan and Quirat competition. Meanwhile, Warrant Officer Farid of BAF base Bir Shrestho Matiur Rahman team secured second position in Azan and Warrant Officer Akter of BAF base Bashar secured second position in Quirat competition.

Death anniv of Hazrat Abdul Kader Zilani held
A mahfil was held at Azimpur Dayera Shariff in the capital yesterday on the occasion of Fateha-e-Yaz Dahum, the 877 death anniversary of Bara Peer Hazrat Abdul Kader Zilani (RA), says a press release. 
On the occasion, Qurankhawni was held after Asr prayers and after Magrib prayer fatehakhawni, milad sharif was held.  A discussion was also held on the life of the spiritual leader Bara Peer Hazrat Abdul Kader Zilani (RA).
