Dr Selina Hayat Ivy, the newly elected mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC), took office yesterday, reports UNB.
Elected to the post for the second consecutive time, the NCC mayor joined the office around 11:15am.
Earlier, she was greeted by hundreds of supporters on her way to the NCC building from her residence in the city.
Flanked by hundreds of supporters, Ivy went to Nagar Bhaban on foot from her residence in Dehabhog area. Ivy sought assistance from the people for her future undertakings as the city's mayor.
“I promise I will serve the people of Narayanganj until the last drop of blood. Although my father was involved in Awami League's politics, he worked for keeping himself above of party politics and opinions. I also want to follow my father,” the newly elected mayor said.
“Now the Nagar Bhaban is open for all. There will be no niche for tender-manipulation, politicisation and nepotism here,” said Ivy, who set a record becoming the country's first female city mayor after she won the 2011 NCC election.
“I'll continue my fight against the unjust and misrule as I did in the past. I'll serve all going beyond political affiliation and views as people irrespective of their political views and creeds voted for me. I'm the mayor for all,” she said. Ivy was reelected as mayor of Narayanganj in an election held on December 22 last.
Ivy was elected NCC mayor with the ruling Awami League ticket for the second time through the Dec 22, 2016 election defeating her opponent Sakhawat Hossain Khan of BNP by 77,902 votes. Ivy bagged 174,602 votes while Sakhawat got 96,700 votes
In the election, a total of 474,931 voters were registered, of whom 239,662 are men and 235,269 women. The elections were held in 174 polling centres.
