A “Leather Village” will be built in Chittagong to restore the lost glory in the leather industry of the region, said Paban Chowdhury, executive chairman of Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) while addressing as the chief guest in the inauguration programme of “Development Fair” yesterday in Chittagong.
“There are only two leather institutions in Chittagong. We want to change Chittagong and bring back its lost glory of leather industry”, Paban added.
“Once Chittagong had significant contribution in leather industry. Currently Chittagong has just two leather factories . Foreign companies already have shown their interest to invest here. We will give them 300-500 acres of land to build a leather village,” added Paban.
“We are developing economic zones in Mirsarai and Anowara and two lakh people from this region will get job opportunities after setting up of these economic zones”, Paban pointed out.
Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong Mohammad Shamsul Arefin presided over the inaugural function while Chittagong Divisional Commissioner Mohammad Ruhul Amin, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police, Chittagong range, Mohammad Shafiqul Islam, Superintendent of Police (SP), Chittagong district, Nur-E-Alam Mina, Chittagong district commander of Muktiojuddha Sangsad Sahab Uddin and city commander Mozaffar Ahmed, among others, addressed it as the special guests.
107 stalls of 95 government and non-government organisations took part in the fair to showcase their development products. Earlier, a colourful grand rally started from Circuit House premises and concluded at the fair venue.The fair remains open from 10am to 10pm following seminar and
cultural programme in evening every day.
