200 child marriages foiled last year at Lohagara

NARAIL: Lohagara upazila administration and public representatives of different unions of the upazila foiled about 200 child marriage bids in different villages of the upazila last year, reports BSS.
About 200 child marriages were stopped by the concerned authorities in the upazila in 2016, said Upazila Nirbahi Officer M Salim Reza. “I stopped about 121 child marriages through mobile courts in different areas of the upazila and sentenced 33 people to different terms” he said. Besides, public representatives of different unions also stopped a number of child marriages in their respective areas, the UNO added. The upazila administration is trying to create awareness among the people especially school students about the consequences of child marriage, he said.
Discussion meeting side by side with awareness campaign is being created among the people to this end, the UNO said.
