The Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolitan (CCDM) is thinking to start the upcoming edition of the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League for the 2017-18 season keeping the tight international schedule of Bangladesh ahead in mind.
Bangladesh will travel to several countries to play different formats of games one after another in the period of the next six months. As soon as the end of the Down Under tours, they will tour to India for one-off Test. They thereafter will travel in Sri Lanka to play another bilateral series, which will be ended by March.
Then they will meet together with Ireland and New Zealand for a tri-nation series in May before heading to England in June for ICC Champions Trophy 2017.
In this perspective, the uncertainty over Dhaka Premier League (DPL) for the 2017 season loomed large. The participating clubs of the league were reluctant to start the DPL without national team’s players.
And so, the authority of the CCDM sat with the clubs officials and discussed the matter how they could move forward. They sketched out two plans. Firstly, they want to kick off the first phase of the league in April in between the gap of the bilateral series against Sri Lanka and the tri-national series in Ireland. Then they will resume the super league phase after Champions Trophy in United Kingdom in June.
Admitting the matter, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) director and its media committee chairman Jalal Younus said that they have not finalized anything but they are moving ahead with two plans.
“We’ve some international schedule ahead. The team will next tour in India for one-off Test after coming home from New Zealand. Then we’ll go in Sri Lanka to play a bilateral series against the Islanders. We’ll therefore go in England to play Champions Trophy following a tri-national series involving Ireland and New Zealand,” said Jalal Younus.
“The schedule is very tight. The CCDM know that very well. And so, we’re thinking to start Premier League within this period. As the national team’s players will not be available so we are thinking to start the league with them or without them. Such kind of thinking is going on. It is tough to say at this moment when we will start the league,” Younus told The Independent.
“There is one month gap in April. Then we have to leave for Ireland in May. For this the problem is being happened. So, the CCDM sketched out a plan to start the first phase of the league in April and later the super league will be held after Champions Trophy. But nothing is settled yet,” he added.
Praising the new initiative of the board, the media committee chairman said that the competition in First Division Cricket League will be increased further.
“First Division Cricket League has been started under the auspices of CCDM for the first time. That’s a good news. A total of 20 teams are participating. Hopefully it will be very competitive tournament,” former CCDM chairman said.
“There are quality players in the league. More quality players will be come out from the league ahead. But It is good thing that we could do start in due time,” he also said.
When asked him about any initiative from the board to arrange any tour for Bangladesh ‘A’ team, Jalal Younus said that they are discussing with Australia, England and New Zealand to arrange tours for A team.
“Our some board officials went to New Zealand, in where they have talked with them to arrange tour or tours for A team. We have targeted to send our A team to Australia, England and New Zealand. The discussion over these tours is going on,” the former paceman revealed.
About the appointment of a spin coach, Jalal said that local coach is enough to look after the academy team.
“We had plans to start the programme what we have for the Academy team. We had no head coach after Simon Helmot, who did not come due to security concern. We will soon start the programme,” he said, adding “We’ve some local spin coaches, who are good enough to conduct the academy team. Mohammad Rafique is working with us. So there will be no problem for us with spin coach.”
