The overall manpower export from Bangladesh witnessed a robust growth of 36.31 per cent in 2016 as some 7.58 lakh Bangladeshi workers got overseas jobs in the last calendar year, reports UNB.
A total of 7,57,731 Bangladeshi workers got jobs in different countries of the world in 2016, which was 36.31 per cent higher than 2015 said Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Nurul Islam at a press briefing at his ministry's conference room yesterday.
The briefing was arranged over the ministry's major achievements and activities in 2016.
The minister said the highest 1,88,247 Bangladeshi workers went to Saudi Arab last year. Among the country's 64 districts, the highest 86,352 workers went abroad from Comilla in 2016, while the second highest 45,780 from Chittagong, he added.
Nurul Islam said Bangladesh received the highest US$2,989 million remittance from Saudi Arab, while the second highest $2,535 from the UAE last year.
He said if the present manpower export trend continues, Bangladesh will be able to export more than eight lakh workers in 2017. At present, some 1.05 crore Bangladeshis workers are now employed in 162 countries, he noted.
Among the 7.58 lakh Bangladeshi workers who went abroad in 2016, 4,638 workers are professional, while 3,18,851 skilled, 1,19,946 semi-skilled and 3,14,296 low-skilled ones.
The minister said Bangladesh is now looks for new labour markets in the world alongside protecting the existing markets.
We're working relentlessly to create jobs for Bangladeshi workers in Russia, Australia, Thailand and Europe, he said.
He claimed that the migration from Bangladesh through illegal channels has stopped as the workers now get the scope of going abroad through legal channels.
Besides, a large number of Bangladeshi workers, who were staying abroad illegally, were made legal due to diplomatic efforts of the labour wings of the ministry, he said.
The Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Minister said some 3.8 lakh workers, including 78,800 females were trained in 70 training centres, including 64 district-level training centres in 2016 for making them competent to get jobs in local and overseas markets.
A total of 3,07,849 workers were trained in 2016, which was 19.37 per cent higher than the number of 2015.
About the future plan, Nurul Islam said the ministry has a plan to open new labour wings in the large markets for providing services to Bangladeshi workers.
