Filling of water bodies at JU protested

SAVAR: The students of Environmental Science department of Jahangirnagar University (JU) under the banner of ‘Paribesh Forum’ formed a human chain on the campus yesterday protesting the construction of building by filling up the lakes and ponds on the campus. 

They formed human chain besides JU physics department about at 11.30 am alleging that university authorities are going to construct a multi-storey building filing up the water bodies. 
Expressing concern about the environment of the campus area, they said, this type of activities will lead to destruction of the environment of this beautiful campus. They demanded to stop such type of activities immediately.
Meanwhile, they brought out a protest procession on the campus that paraded different streets. A total of 100 of students took part in the human chain. 
Earlier, on January 2, JU Vice-Chancellor Farzana Islam laid the foundation stone of a multi-storey building for the Institute Information and Technology (IIT) in a water body besides JU Physics department.
Form then, environment based social organisations on JU campus were campaigning against it.
