Two years and seven months old Snigdha got admitted to Dhaka Shishu (Child) Hospital with multiple complexities and the doctor referred her to Neuroscience Hospital (NH). Prescribing necessary treatment, the doctors of the NH sent Snigdha to Child Development Centre (CDC), reports BSS.
Snigdhas mother said that her daughter has been suffering stiffness of upper and lower extremities for which she could not move at all. Although Snigdha cannot talk, she can move her hands and legs and feels better due to treatment of physician, psychologist and development therapist at the CDC.
Eight years old Bayezid of Brahmanbaria went to sleep usually, felt stiffness of upper and lower extremities during the wake up in the morning. He was brought to the outdoor of Dhaka Shishu Hospital for treatment, but the doctor sent him to the CDC. Now Bayezid is feeling better, but cannot walk. With the consultation of doctors, he is receiving treatment from Centre for Rehabilitation of the Paralyzed (CRP) at Savar.
Not only Snigdha and Bayezid, many children suffering from autism and neurodevelopment related problems are receiving care at the CDC.
CDCs Senior Therapist Dilara Begum said after the birth, it is urgent for a child to have some knowledge and concentration on necessary issues during his/her growing up. But, a child becomes indifferent to what is good or bad and to study for not having such knowledge and concentration.
To get rid of this problem, some motivational works are conducted to the children by parents and school teachers. In addition, parents are also briefed thoroughly about the necessary treatment to ensure the growth of children, she added.
Dilara said they try to develop such children so they can spend normal life like others. CDC sources said it offers treatment to neurodevelopment problem, cerebral palsy, epilepsy and other convulsive disease, autism, behavior problem, speech delay, inability to see and hear, and learning disability related diseases.
On an average, 50 patients are being treated daily although the CDC is supposed to provide treatment to 20 patients, said CDCs Developmental Therapist Ashrafunnahar. She said if any serious patient comes for treatment, they admit the child as the CDC has 20 beds. If more patients than capacity come, they are sent to children ward and physicians of CDC give them treatment.
Ashrafunnahar said they also follow up regularly even after releasing the patient.
We not only provide treatment, but also do counseling of parents and children as well as help the children to get admission to school, she added. The CDC was first introduced non-governmentally at Dhaka Shishu Hospital in 1992. Later, the government under a project opened CDCs in 14 hospitals in 2008. In 2011, the project was extended by five years and following the completion, it was again extended to June next year.
The CDCs are situated at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, Sir Salimullah Medical College and Hospital, Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital, Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College and Hospital, Chittagong Medical College and Hospital, Sylhet M A G Osmani Medical College and Hospital, Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital, Rangpur Medical College and Hospital, Dinajpur Medical College and Hospital, Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital, Khulna Medical College and Hospital, Faridpur Medical College and Hospital, Coxs Bazar Medical College and Hospital and Comilla Medical College and Hospital.
Officials said five more CDCs are being introduced in hospitals. A survey of Dhaka Shishu Hospital (DSH) found that if handicapped children are brought to the CDC on time for necessary treatment, their condition is changed positively.
CDC National Coordinator Professor Dr Nayla Zaman Khan said they have provided treatment for 67,793 children for free till November last year through the CDC across the country.
Theyve all the arrangement at the CDCs to provide treatment for normal growth of children suffering different such diseases, she added.
Line Director (Non-communicable Disease) of Department of Health Dr A H M Enayet Hossain said the government has a plan to open CDCs at all hospitals across the country.
